The Peugeot 308 SW is the estate version of the latest 308 hatchback, but the French manufacturer is keen to point out that the SW is more than just the same car with a bigger boot.
Peugeot has kept the front-end looks of the regular 308 but built the estate version on a longer chassis (the wheelbase is 110mm longer) that should, in conjunction with a larger rear overhang, help the car better the VW Golf Estate and Seat Leon ST for outright luggage space.
There's also a chance that the...

Carmaker Honda is planning to cut production at its Swindon factory, with 500 jobs under threat.

Workers were told on Monday that car plant two would be closing with the loss of 340 jobs, along with up to 160 temporary positions.
The Japanese carmaker, which opened in Swindon in 1992, made 38 compulsory and 554 voluntary redundancies last year.
Ian Howells, from Honda, said: "Over the last 12 months, we haven't seen the growth we'd anticipated."
The cuts come as the plant changed from...

The impending loss of the third and final car manufacturing company from Australia paints a very bleak picture for those currently employed by Toyota, Holden or Ford. The loss of around 2,500 jobs of those directly employed by the Japanese firm will have ripple effects for the economy, as from 2017 Australia will no longer produce cars.
Toyota are the biggest car producer in the world, which shows the...

(LONDON) - Britain's membership of the European Union is "crucial" for the success of the automaking sector, the nation's car industry body said in a key report on Wednesday.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) revealed the key finding of its study, produced by accountancy firm KPMG.

UK carmakers increased production in March, helped by demand from Europe and after a number of firms finished upgrading their plants for new models.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said output had increased to more than 142,000 units, up 12% from a year earlier.
Across 2014 so far, the SMMT said production was about 3% higher on 2013.
Output fell earlier this year as some carmakers adjusted production lines to manufacture new models, the SMMT said.

Truckmaker Volvo is cutting 2,000 jobs after investments in new models and a rising Swedish kronor held back third-quarter profits.

Sweden's largest private sector employer said earnings fell to 2.50bn kronor ($393m; £242m) from 3.48bn kronor a year-ago.
Volvo is launching a new range of trucks ahead of emissions rule changes.
"The changeover to the new products will take another couple of quarters," chief executive Olof Persson said.

DETROIT -- A dispute between TRW Automotive Inc. and General Motors Co. may end a $700 million brake component contract in Saginaw, Mich., sources said.
TRW last month issued a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing that it terminated a brake component contract, representing $700 million in revenue and 6.5 percent margins in 2012, with an undisclosed customer.
TRW declined to discuss the contract or identify the location of the plant supplying the brake parts....

Mercedes-Benz has developed a navigation system that uses a pair of glasses with a voice-activated interface on one of the lenses -- Google Glass -- to merge the experience of driving with what Mercedes calls "digital living."
"This is an example of a seamless transition as you stay connected when you get to your car, when you drive, and when you leave your car," Johann Jungwirth, head of Mercedes' North American r&d, told Automotive News Europe.

DETROIT -- U.S. auto sales increased 10 percent in October as the Detroit 3 gained market share while other major automakers fell short of projections.
The industry's seasonally adjusted annualized selling rate declined from September's sluggish figure, to 15.2 million. Executives and analysts said the closure of federal offices during the U.S. government shutdown curbed traffic in the first half of October before rebounding.

A company in Bratislava, Slovakia is developing a flying car prototype which seeks to achieve the shared dream of futurists the world over: a functional road car which can easily transition to a plane.

Aeromobil released flight test footage of the Aeromobil 2.5, a two-seater with a 100 horsepower Rotax 912 engine. That may not sound powerful, but it is enough to get the tires off the ground and power the rear-mounted propeller in...
